"Peter was professional and was able to come to my house in a short time frame. I had a very simple job, I just need to verify knob and tube was disconnected in basement and that recessed lighting was IFC rated. The price was expensive for what I needed done but I spent some time talking to Peter and I would feel comfortable hiring him if I had a bigger electrical job."

Customers say: Quality work

"Eric Dahlquist Electrical was a super reliable and thorough company to work with. They worked on so much more than just changing out light fixtures, they mounted televisions and trouble shot things in our new home. They are my first choice and my first recommendation for all electrical work."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The doorbell installation cost depends on which and how many parts you need to replace. A new transformer is the least expensive replacement and falls between $20 and $35, plus the cost of hiring an electrician to install it, which can be between $150 and $250. Replacing your entire doorbell system can cost $250 to $400.

This type of conversion is easy—you’ll just need to upgrade to the correct amperage in your wires before wiring the new outlet. However, these projects can be tricky without intermediate electrical knowledge, so consider consulting a pro before flipping any switches on your circuit breaker.

An estimate for electrical work should include an estimated number and an estimated price to complete the work. An electrical estimate should also include a description of the services to be provided as well as the materials to be used, such as wiring, switches, panels, or other items, and the cost for those materials. If any tax is charged, that should appear on the estimate, too. Some estimates may include additional options that can be added to the base price of the quoted job if the customer chooses to go ahead with the add-ons.

It's less expensive to run power overhead because it doesn’t require excavation, and the power cables are less costly. However, underground electric service is better protected from weather and general wear and tear, so it’s less likely to get damaged. When determining which way to run power, consult a local electrician to get an expect opinion.

Buying a house with aluminum wiring requires careful consideration due to potential fire risks. Ensure a thorough inspection by a licensed electrician to assess the condition and identify necessary safety upgrades—factor in these additional costs when deciding. While it may not be a total deal-breaker, understanding the risks and required maintenance is necessary. Also, you should consult your insurer about coverage for homes with aluminum wiring to know whether the house is insurable.
