"This is the first time we used Home Advisor, so honestly, we were a little leery how it would work out. Our concerns were all for naught. We wanted a central vac system added to our house. Claude responded quickly, got the information he needed, and sent us a quote. Once we accepted, he ordered all the materials and set up a time for installation. He showed up on time, explained what he was going to do, and then did the installation. Afterwards, he went over everything in detail, giving us tips on the accessories, changing the bag in the vacuum unit, maintenance, etc. The installation was very neatly done. Claude is a true professional who takes pride in his work. He told us to contact him if we ever have any service issues. We would recommend him to anyone who values quality products and workmanship."

"Ryan was very nice. He came out to our house first for a consultation to make sure he could install the TV where we wanted it. We set up an appointment for the following month. The work took about 4 hours and we are very happy with the result! My only complaint was that he was late for both the consultation and the installation itself without calling to let us know that he would be late, other than that - great service!

Install Central Vacuum questions, answered by experts

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Experienced professionals don’t usually need to take down drywall to install the central vacuum. They are experienced in working in the tight spaces between walls and in crawl spaces to minimize any damage. The only drywall changes should be the holes cut for the new outlets. However, home design, existing plumbing, and other factors may require some modification. An estimate from a professional contractor should include information if any changes need to be made.

The cost to install a central vacuum cleaner system averages about $1,600, ranging from $1,100 to $2,200, depending on the size of the system, add-on features, your home’s location, and age of the system. Accessibility to running lines and other equipment can also impact the project cost. Consult a central vacuum cleaner installation company for an accurate estimate of your installation cost.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.
