"Andre and his crew did an outstanding job rebuilding my old wood deck and replacing it with Trex decking. His communication was excellent. He clearly explained issues that were discovered in the process of tearing down the old deck. The crew was polite, efficient and did a great job cleaning up after, leaving the job site impeccable. Andre’s pricing was also very reasonable and competitive. I would highly recommend AK General Services for your projects!"

"Jonathan team was fantastic! They completed our deck replacement project on time with no surprise costs and with great communication throughout the project. We were able to address multiple issues and smaller projects that had been languishing on our to-do list for years as part of the larger deck replacement, and we will absolutely keep Collazo in mind for future home repairs. 5/5!"

Customers say: True professional

"Chris did an excellent job of demo and upgrading my deck (during a heat wave!) He explained everything in detail that he was doing. He did extra work to make sure it was secure as my last one was collapsing. He always showed up on time and finished on schedule. He shopped at several locations to get the best materials for my deck. I would definitely recommend Chris to others. My deck looks beautiful and I'm enjoying it very much."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Pressure-treated decking may be worth it if you want a natural, insect- and rot-resistant decking material that will last for decades with proper maintenance. As such, it’s a much better option than untreated pine. Alternative wood decking materials like cedar and redwood tend to be less durable and more expensive. Some homeowners prefer composite decking, which is a low-maintenance alternative to wood but is also more costly.

No. In most cases, it’s not colder or freezing temperatures that affect decking materials but the amount of moisture that seeps into the materials as a result. For example, wood decking material is more likely to suffer from rot or decay when exposed to excess moisture from snow or ice. An extreme change in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, but only if it’s not properly treated beforehand.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

Yes. Composite decking is resistant to moisture and freezing temperatures, so it’s an ideal material to use in particularly cold or damp seasons. You can install this type of decking throughout the year since it does not warp or split in the cold.

You can nail or screw composite decking, but 3-inch decking screws are the better fastener choice. Unlike nails, decking screws won’t back out of the composite material over time. There’s also little danger of splitting composite material when driving screws, so you don’t need to pre-drill holes unless otherwise recommended by your decking manufacturer.
