"I had an exceptional experience with Michael from start to finish. When he came to give us the estimate he was very thorough answering all the questions and providing recommendations on a generator. He gave us a quote less then 24 hour later and we had an appt set up the following week. He came to do the job at the time he said he would and communicated when he needed to have power turned off. After he completed the job he explained how to use the switch and even set up the generator to test the whole system out. He also helped with a faulty fire alarm that kept going off. I would recommend Michael without hesitation, for anyone who’s looking to have electrical work done. He’s very good at explaining how things work and answers questions. We will definitely call him again next spring when it’s time to install our pool, so he can run electrical wires to power the pump."

You can determine what size generator you need by listing the various appliances it will power during an outage. Write down the start-up watt usage, and then add them all together. 

A 7,500-watt generator will run your refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits without a problem. These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.
