I received pictures taken of a portion of the duct, was disappointed I could not see to the end of the vent clean out. My other concern is how the service tech left the dryer vent curled up and partially crushed as he put the dryer back in place, and then took this picture to display it. It would seem obvious that once you saw the vent like that you would correct it. Not happy with that. "

"After Lowe's came to clean the dyer vents at my condo building, my dryer was no longer venting. I contacted them and initially they said they would send someone to check the vent. They then called back and said my vent was never clean because it was disconnected and they could not help me. This was strange because the dryer was working fine before they came. Also, in my trash there was foil tape that you would wrap around the vent. This made me think that they did try to clean the vent despite saying they did nothing. I contacted my management company who said there were never any previous issues with my vent. I called Lowe's back and told them this and they still insisted that they never touched it but would check with the technician. I looked into it my self and found that in the section of the vent between the dryer and the ceiling there was a mass of lint the size of a small animal (see the picture). It was so large that moisture from the dryer had also built up and flooded the bottom of the vent hose. The building manager was then able to clear another mass of lint from the section of the vent in the ceiling and the dryer then started venting to the outside. It was never disconnected like Lowe's said. It seems they started cleaning it and just jammed the dust all the way back to the dryer. Why they didn't finish removing it is a mystery. If they ever service my building again, I will refuse."

You might have dampers if you have a ducted heating and cooling system. To find out for sure, find the main trunk line on your HVAC unit, then look for levers or handles on the ductwork. Contact a local HVAC professional if you can’t find any dampers or want to install some.

Dryer vents need thorough cleanings one or two times a year, depending on family size and how often you run the machine. Failing to do so can put your home at an increased risk of fire. You should also schedule special cleanings if you notice that your dryer is taking longer to dry than normal, if you see lint building up on the outside flapper or in the vent itself, if you notice your dryer vent leaking water, or if your clothes have an odd odor on them after going through a drying cycle.

Using a leaf blower to clean your dryer vent isn't a good idea. Theoretically, the leaf blower should push the lint and debris toward the exterior vent opening, helping it exit. That's usually not what happens, though. 

Instead, the lint can get stuck further in the vent, creating a blockage and making the problem worse. You need a scrubbing tool, such as the rotating brush head on a dryer cleaning kit, to push the lint out of the ductwork.

While a professional can always help, there are some common plumbing culprits you can check yourself to see if you can find the sewer gas smell. For example, you should check your water traps, sometimes called P-traps and S-traps, which are located under sink, shower, and laundry drains. The wax ring beneath the base of your toilet, which creates a watertight seal with the plumbing, could also have gone bad.

A dryer vent inspection is simply the process of checking the vent for the possibility of damage or clogs. You can do it yourself or hire a pro. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the portion of the vent that’s behind the appliance for lint buildup or kinks. Check the connection of the vent to the wall for loose parts or lint that’s escaping the vent. Check the exterior exhaust vent for signs of damage or lint blockage. A pro can check the length of the vent inside the wall for you.
