Small jobs welcome

"We had our driveway and sidewalks paved, and the company did an excellent job. The crew was prompt, professional, and very courteous throughout the entire process. Their workmanship was high quality, and everything was completed on time. We’re very happy with the results and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for paving services."

"Leo and team replaced our driveway, installed a patio, and built a retaining wall with an enclosed fence. They were on time, worked incredibly hard, and did a great job. He was flexible, understood our needs and overall a very nice guy. Highly recommend."

"I hired this company to install cobblestone border and a new asphalt driveway. George responded promptly to give us a quote and started the cobblestones about 2 weeks later and paved the driveway a few days later. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer job."

"EA Masonry came recommended by friends and Angie's List as well. The work they did was extensive--repairing 80 year old stone walls, widening our driveway and installing pavers instead of asphalt, reconstructing and reconfiguring the stairs coming down to the driveway, excavating and rebuilding walls. Their communication was excellent. They were fast but didn't cut a single corner. They worked closely with us to track down pavers that would match the walkway we had put in years ago. They added underground drainage from downspouts. And they are such nice guys! We have already arranged for them to do more work for us. I would recommend them without hesitation. We just could not be happier with the result."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

Your city or county will have guidelines about the minimum and maximum width and length of private roads. The average private road is 12 feet wide, and length, of course, depends on your property. Requirements also depend on the amount of traffic and types of vehicles your road experiences. Check with local ordinances before planning a road on your property.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.
