Other options like hog wire and woven wire fences are also cost-effective because they require less lumber than a full wooden fence. These types of wire fences are strong, long-lasting, and relatively easy to repair, though they are often considered less aesthetically pleasing than wood.

In the vast majority of cases, chain-link fences are less expensive than wood fences. Installing a wood fence costs anywhere from 20% to 30% more than a chain-link fence, or an average of $3,100, whereas a similarly sized chain-link fence will average around $2,400. The other neighbor must keep trees and other obstacles from crossing the property line and affecting the fence. If the fence is directly on the property line, though, who owns a shared fence? Many states have laws that address this issue. Typically, the two property owners would share responsibilities and costs for fence maintenance and repair. You may need a property line survey to precisely determine ownership and responsibility.
