"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

"I contacted Home Facelifters to remove a small concrete barrier from my garage, to repair the porch at the end of my house that was developing cracks and holes around the foundation, and to perform a couple of handyman tasks (replace a doorknob and replace smoke detectors). Joe replied to my inquiry and came out to give me an estimate within a couple of days of when I contacted him. When he and his crew started working on the porch repair they found that the problems were much more extensive than originally anticipated. The porch was actually pulling away from the house, and as the crew started to work on the porch they found a couple of large cracks running the length of the foundation under the floor of the porch, making it unsafe. It was clear to all of us that the porch would have to be replaced. Joe quickly came up with some estimates and found a solution to retain the roof over one end of the porch. He proposed replacing the porch with a new deck. The crew supported the roof on the side of the porch and removed the underlying porch and the concrete slabs. They dug holes for new piers and footing and poured concrete. It was also discovered there was some old (not active) termite damage on the lower side of the house where the new deck would be attached (this was damage that was treated when I bought the house 16 years ago so it was no longer active but the bottom portion of part of that side of the house had to be repaired and reshingled). During the entire process Joe was great about communicating the latest set-back and keeping me up to date on additional expenses. In the end the crew built a beautiful new deck with railings up to code. The job was much more complicated than what I originally anticipated and ended up being more expensive but was necessary. I may have been able to get the work done elsewhere for slightly less money but I do not know that I would have received the same quality craftsmanship. Joe and his assistant were great to work with throughout the process. They communicated clearly about when they were going to show up and about the progress of the work. They worked long days, often after dark, in freezing cold weather but finished most of the work as quickly as possible. There are still a couple of things left to be done (painting and building stairs to the deck) but those things have to wait until warmer weather. This is the second time I have used Home Facelifters for a major project at my home, and I highly recommend them."

"I found Rattigan and Sons when I did a search on Angi for somebody to tear down the unattractive acoustic tile ceilings in the living room and dining room of my old house, and replace them with beautiful tin ceilings. Unlike so many other contractors that I had tried to reach, Jody, the owner of Rattigan and Sons, responded to my call promptly (which was standout service right there, since so many people I tried never called back) and she had her carpenter Brandon in my home doing an estimate within a week. From the scheduling to the planning and pricing and everything else that goes along with any home improvement project, Jody was professional, thorough, responsive, transparent, listened to my concerns and preferences and made it clear all along that her first priority is for the customer to be happy. And when I met her highly skilled carpenters Brandon and Kermit who came to do the work, I was so impressed - not only their experience and knowledge, but also with their communication and customer service skills which put me totally at ease and gave me complete confidence that they were the right people for the job. They explained everything they were doing, kept me informed as they went along and asked for my feedback, and if they identified a problem along the way they always had a solution to offer. However their abilities to really listen, empathize with my concerns as the homeowner , and make me feel that they cared about my home as much as I do and wanted me to be completely happy, were truly exceptional and can be very hard to find. And I am happy – my ceilings are now so beautiful! Jody, Brandon and Kermit were even willing to make adjustments when some unexpected scheduling changes occurred so that they actually finished the job ahead of schedule, and worked incredibly hard to do so. They clearly enjoy their work and take great pride in producing high quality results. By the time they left my home, they felt like family. I really cannot say enough good things about my experience with Rattigan and Sons and I will definitely be calling them again for future projects. You should too!"

"He did a great job and got to lots of leaves. Our house is such that there were some gutters he couldn't get to and we bought a special for 2 hours so after maybe 2.5 hours he said he had to leave, but he did a good job and just went about his work. I was satisfied.

Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

The term “cottage” is subjective, so there’s no rigid definition, but it generally refers to a small home with simple and purposeful architecture that embraces nature and focuses on charm over everything else. Cottages are typically 1 or 1 1/2-stories tall, usually with gabled roofs, and are built out of natural materials that help make the structure a part of the surrounding nature rather than something that stands out from it. A big part of what makes a cottage a cottage is the decor, which includes natural materials from the nearby area.

Ranch and colonial-style homes are often the most affordable to build. They have a common layout with available designs that are easy to adjust in simple ways without having to spend too much on a structural engineer or architect. Both types of homes' symmetry, simple roofs, and often one or two-story plans mean they often fall in the $150 to $200 square-foot range, putting them right around average.

The time it takes to build a shed heavily depends on the type of shed you buy. A prefab shed can be built in 4 to 8 hours, while a custom shed will be built off-site over the span of 2 to 5 days. It then takes a few hours, depending on the location, to move the finished shed to its final location.

Whether a prefab home is worth it or not will depend on your personal needs and preferences. Overall, prefab homes tend to cost less than traditional homes, although they also tend to have lower resale values. Another thing to consider is that prefab homes usually last 50 to 60 years or longer, while traditional homes last 50 to 100 years or more.

Complex plumbing is tricky and expensive in an off-the-ground dwelling like this. By considering options like composting toilets, rainwater collection, and gray-water sinks, you save money and help the environment.
