It’s technically possible to remove some soffit material without removing your gutters, but it’s usually a good idea to remove gutters, fascia, and soffit and then reinstall them in the opposite order. Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. Avoid trying to break the ice from the exterior using a hammer as this can cause cracks and damage to your downspout.

To avoid freezing the future, consider adding a heating cable to the exterior, which can adjust heat based on the surrounding temperature.

While gutter guards come in various materials and grades, stainless steel mesh gutter guards are generally considered the best type of gutter guard due to their durability and effectiveness. The mesh prevents most debris from entering the gutter. It's also much longer lasting and easier to clean than gutter guards made with other materials.

While gutter guards offer significant advantages, they also have some drawbacks—namely, they don't completely eliminate the need for cleaning, and certain objects (like mold or large debris) can still damage your roof. If they're installed improperly, they can void the roof warranty, and heavy guards could even damage your roof fascia or roof material itself.
