"Will is a good guy, who means well, and he tries hard to please, but he is a bit careless, and does not have a lot of experience with other than routine tasks.  And he refused to accept responsibility for a major mistake.
I hired Will to paint the ceiling in my living room, hall, and 3 bedrooms.  There was a good deal of water damage in some of the rooms, and a few dents in the ceilling.  He did not quite capture the technique to match the texture of the ceiling, but with some prodding and my suggestions, he kept redoing it until he got it right, generally
Apparently he never quite got the technique, because we went thru the same drill in each of the rooms.  Most came out ok after a few corrections, which he performed only when prodded. 
There was a bit of an issue of neatness.  He managed to get a light spatter of paint on a few pieces of furniture that were uncovered, and on the floor (I did manage to get it off relatively easily, but it should have been better protected).  He threw a used drop cloth over my bed when painting the ceiing, and I found the bed covered with a "dandruff" of dried paint chips.  He had painted the whole living room and hall before i noticed that he had got paint on all the walls.  He said "Oh, I thought you were going to paint the walls"... Well, I did paint them, but I had not been planning on it.
When he went to do the bedrooms, I told him that I was not planning on painting them, so could he please tape the walls before painting. Unfortunately, one of the rooms was wallpapered, so it really did need masking.  It took nearly 2 weeks to finish that room (he was sick, then I was away...) and when he got done, and pulled the tape off, the top of the wallpaper came off with it.  Not just in one spot, but all the way around the room, a colossal mess.  When I asked his what he was going to do to do to fix it, his response was "Me, fix it??? it was your idea to use tape!!"  Of course, he is no longer working on this job...  As he was packing his stuff out, he had the nerve to claim that I fired him just because I did not want to pay him.
Actually, after repeated efforts, the work that Will did came out fine (except for things like destroying my wallpaper).  Some rather severe water damage and dents were successfully covered up.  I really have become quite fond of Will, and hope he finds his niche.  But he does need to use more care, and to take responsibility for his mistakes.

"Bruce did a professional wallpaper removal job, prepped the walls for the new wallpaper, and installed the new wall coverings. He exceeded expectations as he went beyond the scope of the job and caulked in areas where a carpenter had screwed up on base boards and crown moulding. He fixes problems having nothing to do with wallpaper when he ran into them. My dryer had disconnected from the vent during other work done previously. He took the time to connect it and he secured it. His work is nothing short of excellent. We will call upon him for any future work that we run into. (There are not that many people who did work for us that we would call again - actually Bruce is probably the only one)!. He left my home spotless with everything in place."

"JJJ was one of three businesses contacted.  One of the others was on Angie's; the third was the friend of a friend.  JJJ had the best references, the speediest response to my email, and took the time to answer my questions truthfully prior to our scheduling a first meeting.  Trust me...I am so used to getting the 'come on' via the phone and take it with a grain of salt.  This was very, very different.  He told me how long his employees had been working with him (incredibly low turn-over - this was a plus for me).  He reported his prices are higher and that it represents the quality of his work.  (His price was in the middle of the three).  He gave me his business phone, cell phone, email.  (Each one was met with a speedy response).  I told him of my situation - I work out of my house, and the work would not be able to be done when clients are here.  Due to the nature of my work, I needed to be here while they were working, so took a week of vacation.  Jason and his extremely competent workers (Billy and Collin) were very mindful of the fact that I was spending my vacation at home amidst lots of work!  
    I have a home built in the 1700's that was moved to his present location in the 70's.  Much moulding, cracked walls, shifting frames & sills of 30 windows (windows that were replaced BADLY by Home Depot), nooks and crannies everywhere, trim chewed by dogs, wallpaper under old paint (news to me!), crooked lines, falling ceiling, unweatherized walls & ceilings - man, they had a job to do!  They did it BEAUTIFULLY.  The original movers of this home would be so pleased to see the job.  They firmed-up the sagging ceiling, built up the dog-chewed trim and sills, even did their best to makes the replaced windows look great.  
    Daily work:  I have never, never experienced workers that possess the drive that I witnessed.  Billy and Collin never took a break for longer than 2-3 minutes.  I kept asking if they were going to do lunch - nope, they do it at the end of the day on the way home.  I even provided lunch vouchers at local restaurants for a 'thank you" on their last day so they could finally take a break - nope, they did it on their way home again.  These guys continually monitored each other's work.  Remember - I was here all the time, so I got to see and hear.
    Last note:  They just finished the outside - a large porch and all the housetrim.  I asked Jason for a bid on the kitchen cabinets and trim.  He asked me to think about it, rather than opting for painting right away.  He said the natural wood is beautiful and the quality of cabinetry is exquisite.  He could have had another painting job with me.  Instead, he put integrity above greed.  To me, that's what makes this company.      
    This company means integrity, quality, respect.  I will never use anyone else."
