"I initially got Extreme Construction to fix my roof, (that was leaking), and drywall damaged by the leak. They did a good job and cleaned up any mess. My roof continued to leak. It is a new addition that has been worked on several times over s 10 year period. I finally gave in and hired Extreme Construction to put a metal roof on my house. Which, is no small job. I have 4,000 SF to cover, with 3 different addition areas. James, the head contractor, was very explained everything and is very knowledgable and nice. Im fact, the whole crew was great. My roof did not leak during the hard rain last night, for the first time in 10 years. The price was good and James was up front. He was more than fair. I plan on doing more projects in the future, and I will be calling Extreme Construction. When people are working on your most prized possession it is imperative that they are knowledgable and trustworthy. This company exceeded my expectations in these areas."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.

Repairing plaster walls or ceilings is almost always worthwhile. It restores the appearance of your home, and if it's an exterior wall, the repair can improve curb appeal and provide a great return on investment when selling. Plaster repairs can also reinforce the wall, preventing minor cracks from spreading, and improve your home’s energy efficiency by fixing gaps in the insulative material, potentially lowering your heating and cooling bills. Additionally, hiring a professional allows them to check if the damage is from a serious underlying issue, such as foundation instability. Catching a problem like this early could save you thousands.

It may take a bit of patience and trial and error to match your particular drywall texture type when making repairs. For orange peel or knockdown finishes, use a spray texture product or a thinned joint compound applied with a roller or sponge. Practice on scrap drywall or cardboard first. Once dry, lightly sand and prime before painting.

Plaster walls typically last between 30 and 70 years, but depending on the quality of the materials and the moisture levels in the building, they can last for over 100 years. With expert application and consistent maintenance, plaster can even last for centuries. To extend its lifespan, it is important to have the plaster professionally installed, address any water damage promptly, and repair small cracks as they appear. Regular inspections by a professional can help identify and address concerning cracks before they become significant issues.
