"Norman was personable, as was his son.
Options were spoken of and seemed good, and he contacted a supplier by phone to find out if the double sided coal basket was available and a custom one could be made.

He went up in my attic to look at my hvac problem also.
Gave me some verbal recommendations from what was visible without the unit on long enough to see the water leak.
He looked at the outside unit, too.

I think the visual inspection went well, but not worth the $169.00 fee.

The estimate for all fireplace work was emailed and a follow up phone call made to let me know the estimate was sent, but for removing the couple dozen bricks from my fireplace the estimate was far too high @ $900.00.

And I thought the remainder of the estimate to prepare the opening and place the ventless coal basket inside was also too high @ $2250.00.
The price of the basket itself was acceptable, custom made with shipping included.

I wrote back that I thought the estimates were too high, and asked if he determined where my fireplace chimney was sealed, but did not get a response.
I called to get an hvac estimate sent and have not heard back.

"I gave this contractor four stars even though I didn't hire them because I appreciated the fact that the person I spoke with gave me advice on steps to take that may solve the problem I was having with my fireplace instead of trying to sell me their service. Very good customer service"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes. It’s okay to leave a pellet stove on overnight, and these stoves can provide 24 to 48 hours of warmth from one ignition. However, you should practice proper pellet stove maintenance, like cleaning the burn pot before each use, deep cleaning the unit at least once per year, and running the fan when the stove is lit.

Pellet stoves do require electricity to power their automated features, such as the pellet feeder, fans, and digital controls. However, their electricity consumption is relatively low compared to other household appliances. During a power outage, pellet stoves equipped with battery backup systems or manual ignition options can still operate, though fans and automatic feed mechanisms may not function. Have a backup heating plan in place for these situations, especially if you live in a region prone to severe weather events.

The burn time of pellets in a pellet stove depends on factors such as stove size, heat setting, and pellet quality. A full hopper of pellets can last anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. Lower heat settings will extend burn times, while higher settings will reduce them. It's important to choose high-quality pellets because they burn more efficiently and produce less ash, maximizing the stove's burn time and overall performance. Regularly monitoring the pellet level ensures consistent heat output and optimal efficiency from your pellet stove.

Having a pellet stove can indeed raise your insurance rates since they're a relatively common cause of fires in the home. However, rate increases vary by insurance provider so you should reach out to yours to determine exactly how much your rates might increase with a new pellet stove install.

Yes, if your gas fireplace has a flue, you typically need to open it when using the fireplace. Although gas fireplaces don’t produce the type of smoke and soot that wood-burning ones do, they still release combustion gasses like carbon monoxide. Opening the flue ensures these gasses safely exit your home through the chimney. Not all gas fireplaces need a chimney, however. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific gas fireplace model, as some newer models may have different ventilation requirements.
