"Ryan was very responsive and did a great job. Was done on time and he communicated well through the process. Their price was in the middle of the three bids we got. We will sure use them on upcoming projects."

"A difficult experience. Work was fence repair and clean gutters. 3 men came, one was the driver who insisted on waiting inside my home. There he sat for the duration. My partner was away on business, so I was a woman alone (target?) The talker actively negotiated a price. I stood fairly firm, but now think I paid too much. I was told to write the check to cash. No receipt. The "owner" called a few times to check on things. Said the van had broken down, hence the driver. The work was ok, one of the workers got stung by wasps, I supplied a topical medicine. The talker needed: a drill (I didn't have one, they came up with one), an extension cord, screws (I brought out my toolbox), etc. Talker engaged me many times outside while the driver sat in my living room (a complete stranger to me). Talker was a fast talker and said things like "want me to go buy some wasp spray for you?" (I was out). I knew there would be an up-price, and was starting to feel hustled. When it was time to write the check, I went to the back. At that very moment the driver asked to use the facilities. I showed him where, and left him alone to engage with the talker. They basically had me running back and forth. The work on the fence was OK, some of it shoddy. for example, the screws were haphazardly placed, most sticking out (not flat with the wood). Some broken pickets were overlooked. Some pickets were split from their work. The gate repair was good (they used my own spare wood). I would not engage them again for the above reasons."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.
