It’s usually best to build a garage in the summer or fall, with most homeowners preferring the fall. Winter might bring frozen ground that can make excavating and pouring a foundation a challenge, and spring tends to bring more rainfall, which can delay the building process. Installing new HVAC can increase a home’s value by 5% to 7%. While installing a mini-split unit in the garage may not offer that much of a boost to the home value, it is a lower-cost option than installing a more traditional cooling system in the garage. Plus, if a cooler garage allows you to spend more time in the space doing tasks you enjoy, it makes the investment worthwhile.

Ranch and colonial-style homes are often the most affordable to build. They have a common layout with available designs that are easy to adjust in simple ways without having to spend too much on a structural engineer or architect. Both types of homes' symmetry, simple roofs, and often one or two-story plans mean they often fall in the $150 to $200 square-foot range, putting them right around average.
