Air vents should never be blocked. It can disrupt the airflow in your home and make rooms too stuffy, hot, or cold. If the vents are blowing out cold air when you want hot air, covering the return vents won't solve the problem. You either have a dirty air filter, furnace problems, or, more than likely, leaky air ducts that need sealing.

You may be interested in moving a return air vent as an alternative to adding a new one. You can technically move return air vents, but you should always consult an HVAC professional before doing so. Moving your return air vents can disrupt your HVAC system's airflow and may require that a pro make adjustments to the ductwork. Moving the vents as a DIY project could damage your HVAC system and cause it to work improperly.

Professional air duct cleaning takes two to five hours, depending on the size of your home and the extent of the cleaning. The ductwork in standard homes with total square footage of 1,500 to 2,000 will take closer to two hours. Larger homes with extensive return and supply ductwork—often over 3,000 square feet—can push up to five hours. Keep in mind that related cleanings and repairs in your HVAC system will add to this total and may require two visits.
