"I hired Jeanneâ s Total Home Care to put up a fence, and ended up hiring them for many other projects (from pressure washing to building a screened in patio) because, in my experience with them, they have the utmost integrity weâ ve found with any contractors in the area. Pricing is fair, they care about their work, and aim to please. Great contractor to work with. Highly recommend them, and already have them scheduled for more projects!"

"By this experience, I would encourage everyone to research all material needed and prices before excepting a quote. The work done looked okay, but the cedar walls built to inclose patio was not what I asked for as a finished project. So after all said and done, I did a research. Found the right lumber needed in about 5 min., and as far as the price I paid per the wrong material that was used, well I'm not sure what happened there because I can't find where the two go together at any location that I've looked. I blame myself for being somewhat naive, trusting, and a little bit lazy. Good news is, I have already researched all material and prices to fix this project and for another project coming up in a few days. So all I will need at that time is a quote for labor from whoever the contractor may be. Bottom line to all this is if you have the material at hand there will be no misunderstanding to what you want done. And most of all the price is right!"

Patios questions, answered by experts

You can start your search for a reputable patio company by finding providers in your area with positive ratings online and few, if any, complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Once you narrow down your search, contact the companies and ask for examples of their past work, as well as a list of references. The examples will show you the quality of the work you can expect and how professional the finished product will be, and contacting previous customers will give you an idea of the service you can expect throughout the process.

Yes, a sunroom will require a permit. You may just need a general construction permit for a screened-in porch or solarium. For a three-season room with electricity and a four-season room with electric, heating, and cooling, you’ll need additional permits for each of the utilities, as well as a roofing permit.

If you’re trying to decide between a sunroom and a screened-in porch, the right choice will depend on your priorities. A screened-in porch costs only a fraction of the price of a sunroom, but in exchange, it has much more limited use. A sunroom will add more value to your home, but at a much higher up-front cost and longer construction timeline.

Yes, porches require foundations. The type of foundation required, however, is determined by the type and use of the porch. For example, a screened-in porch won’t require a new cement foundation. However, if you turn your porch into a sunroom or plan on making it a living space, then chances are you need a foundation that’s more permanent than piers and posts.

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.
