"I will have to say that the granite countertops were nicely done. They are beautiful. There are questions tho that a customer needs to be aware to ask. First, do not sign the contract without knowing details. I felt good about the company and couldn’t imagine issues that could arise. The people are very nice and knowledgeable. 1. Call a day or two ahead and validate when they will be coming. I took them at their word and unloaded drawers where the countertops were going. On the day they were to come, I was told “someone scratched through my name”. It was another week or two before they actually got here. 2. Be aware that you need to have a plumber on standby, and that is an extra charge with getting granite. R & R can disconnect plumbing, but say they are not insured to reconnect it. I was left in a mess. I am blessed that I have an amazing plumber service who took care of me. 3. Once the granite is in, you need to know that whatever clamps that were installed with your sink probably will not work due to the extra thickness. Your plumber is who helps with that...again, an extra charge. The plumber will also have to secure your dishwasher back in place. 4. Who repairs damages on your walls from pulling the other tops off? You do. The approximate cost of the service below includes plumber fees and wall repair fees. It will vary also according to the size of your kitchen."

Marble and Granite questions, answered by experts

There are many countertop options to consider instead of granite. Other natural stones include marble and quartz, or you could consider laminate countertops that mimic the look of granite for less. When choosing an alternative to granite, keep the durability and the cost of installing countertops in mind.

If the hearth ends against a wall, you can use a tile cutter as you normally would. However, if the edge of your hearth ends with no surface pressing against it,you may want to look into rounded tiles. These give a smooth edge to your hearth and make sure cut edges aren’t visible. You can also see if the tile you have has pieces that have been glazed or rounded on one edge. You’d then cut the tile and place it normally, with the cut edge facing inward.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.

No, tiling over painted walls or wallpapered surfaces is generally not recommended. Textured surfaces and paints will affect the adhesive, possibly causing tiles to lift or fall off. Painted walls with a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish are particularly difficult for adding tiles. It’s wise to strip the paint first if you install the tiles to drywall, although it’s still best to opt for a cement backer board.

To ensure an even and unbending surface to lay tiles on, you’ll typically need to put a subfloor under a tile floor. Fiber cement backboards are the most common choice, but using plywood is also possible. Don’t neglect this step, or you could risk water damage and grout or tiles prematurely cracking or crumbling, especially in an area with high foot traffic.
