"Jeff has done multiple repairs and installs in my home over the years. Originally he wasn't available to do this install, but when I had another contractor reschedule multiple times and not show, I jumped when Jeff said he was available. Jeff is my first call. The microwave was basic, I just helped Jeff lift it out of the box and he did the rest. He also fixed a door that was coming off the hinges and a door that wasn't closing correctly. He lets an expletive in his speech fly ever so often, but he polite, dresses for the job, and is prepared."

First, look for scratches or tool marks around the keyhole or the lock's surface. Also, check for loose or misaligned components, like a wonky strike plate, which could indicate tampering. Consulting a locksmith or security professional for an assessment can provide valuable insights, too. Investing in high-quality locks and considering additional security measures, like security cameras, can help deter potential intruders and enhance your overall safety.

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation. If a portion of the key is still protruding from your lock, try lubricating the keyway and using pliers or even a bobby pin to pull the key out of the hole. If you have jigsaw blades handy, you can also try using those to grab onto the stuck key and pull it out. 

But, if neither option works or you can’t reach the key, your only option is to call a locksmith for help. 

Using a combination of tools (often store-bought plumbing tools) and brute force, a burglar can easily snap the lock on a door. Snapping a lock aims to gain access to the cylinder inside, which holds the locking mechanism. Once the thief snaps the lock, they can pick the cylinder open and walk right in.
