He also found she’d been nursing and captured two kits in the crawl space. He told me to tell him if I heard anymore sounds which I did when he returned the following day. He captured two more kits and told me to call him again if I heard any more sounds. There weren’t any more and I was impressed that he still called to follow up. A rodent infestation often has a distinctive, unpleasant smell. The most common odor is a strong, musky scent, similar to stale ammonia, which comes from mouse urine. Knowing what attracts mice to your house can help you figure out how to eliminate them or prevent them from ever appearing. Mice visit your house for two main reason:

  1. Access to food or water: Mice eat everything from grains and seeds to fruits and veggies. They’re also thirsty critters that return to leaky faucets and pet bowls. 

  2. Access to shelter: Mice flock to any place that’s warm, hidden, and viable for shelter. That might be an insulated attic, a crack in the wall, or a cluttered indoor area.

While it may seem counterintuitive to continue sleeping in a room with bed bugs, it’s the best option to avoid spreading the infestation to other rooms, homes, or surfaces. In the nights before your bed bug removal professional arrives, continue sleeping in the same bed, but wear as much protective clothing as possible, such as long pants, long socks, and long-sleeve shirts. That way, you’ll limit the number of bites during the night.

Gel bait and gel bait traps use poison to kill cockroaches, and aren’t safe to use around pets. Many gel bait traps are called “child-resistant,” but this only means that the traps are hard to rip open for children. Large pets and children are still able to swallow them. If you use gel bait, use it in areas where pets and children can’t access them, such as under a washing machine. Another option is to use glue traps, which don’t contain pesticides and are safe to use around pets. 

It’s unlikely true water bugs will get into your home plumbing system. You may find them in gutters, rain barrels, or open irrigation on your property. If there are bugs near your indoor pipes, leaky sinks, or other moist places, they are probably Oriental cockroaches.
