We operate with just the two owners, we do all the work personally. The only jobs we don't do ourselves are masonry jobs that we subcontract out. My business is small consisting of three employees. We do not subcontract any work it is all performed by us. We do all work based on a written contract. There is generally an estimate given up front. I require that all materials for any job be paid up front and labor expenses be paid after job is finished. All payments made should be made via cash, debit or credit card, check or money order.

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

It is possible to repair plaster walls yourself, but it’s not always a good idea. Hiring a professional means you’ll have expert eyes on the damage looking to see if there is an underlying issue or if the cracks are just from normal expansion and contraction. Additionally, a professional’s plaster repair will very likely last longer than a DIY job, which means you could end up saving money over time by going with a pro from the start.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

Venetian plaster is very easy to maintain. As long as your plaster is properly sealed, you can safely wipe it down with water and mild soap to remove any scuffs or stains. And if your plaster wall cracks or chips, you can often simply patch it rather than replastering the whole wall to restore its appearance.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

If the water damage is small, such as small patches, you can paint over the area. To prevent mold growth, roll on a coat of an antifungal primer beforehand painting. However, if the damage is more extensive, you may have mold, and the plaster will be compromised. You’ll have to replace the plasterboard.
