Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes.   • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key. 

While lock crunching as a whole is not terribly common, it is one of the most frequently used means of forced entry into a home. Recent data suggests that forced entry through lock crunching or snapping occurs in more than 25% of burglaries.

If you’re having an issue turning the key inside a lock, chances are there is dust or dirt buildup within the cylinder. The easiest solution is applying a dry lubricant to the lock, which loosens the dirt buildup. You may need to turn the key a few times for it to work properly again.

The cost to rekey locks on your home is $40 to $100 plus $15 to $40 per lock. Rekeying means you can keep your existing locks but simply change the key. You’ll still need a pro to cut a new key and rekey the lock, but no new hardware is required. Rekeying is a good option if:

  • You need a quick way to upgrade your current locks

  • You have a quality lock that works well

  • You recently moved in and want to ensure you’re the only one with access

  • You lost a key
