"These guys are fantastic! I wish I could have them do all the work on my homes. The work is top notch and fast! I had Damian, the owner, and his crew replace two skylights and repair ceiling drywall. We needed the work done fast since one of the skylights was leaking. Nonetheless, we made sure to get a couple of estimates. The cost of the project was right on target with what we were expecting, but the reason I want to use these guys over and over again is that the work of his crew and responsiveness of Damian. He had someone at my house within 24 hours of our first call to take a look at the job and I had an estimate the next morning. I had a couple questions about the skylight brand, quality, and labor/product warranty being installed and wanted a copy of their insurance certificates. He answered all of these. I had an updated estimate and their insurance info within 24 hours. I was on the schedule for later that week. The guys showed up on time and replaced the skylights in a single day. Damian was onsite at the start of the day to make sure the guys started on time, collect the deposit, and address a small hiccup with the project. When the guys finished, Damian came back out to inspect the work before allowing the guys to leave. We waited for a big rain as a precaution before taking care of the inside work. When it came time for the drywall repair this process was just as easy. The guys worked hard all day long and the quality of work was superb. It's hard to patch ceiling drywall in such a way that it looks seamless and not a patch job; especially when the ceiling is flat and not textured. These guys pulled it off though, and in a single day nonetheless. Before getting started they walled off their work area with plastic and took every precaution to contain the dust. When they were finished, they disposed of all waste, wiped down shelves and countertops, and swept. Before they left, Damian called to make sure I was happy with the work and accept the final payment. This company is a dream. I'm getting ready to do renovations on another property and have already asked them for estimates on this property. I'm looking forward to using these guys as much as possible."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.
