"At first, we thought things were going great. He finished framing in walls for us put a new window in a bedroom, but then little things started happening like the inside of the window trim was not done, and I thought that that would be included in the cost of replacing the windows, it was not, when he started to remodel our bathroom, he redid some plumbing which in the middle of the night burst leaving us with a water filled home and a ruined dining room floor. We let him continue to work in our home and for a second time he had liquid level come through the ceiling into our dining room , we did not have a good experience with him. He did not make it right and he walked away. We are left to finish all the work that he did not finish. We are now also having to replace our dining room floor and the ceiling along with having a table refinished because he got liquid level all over it and he ruined other furniture in our home. He took no responsibility. He didn’t help with any of the cleanup or drying up the floor."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

It may not come as a surprise that the kitchen is the most expensive room in the house to renovate. This is due to the expensive appliances like the range, hood, and fridge, but also because the bones of the room—like electrical and plumbing—are expensive to move or replace. While there are ways to renovate a kitchen on a budget, it will always carry a hefty price tag, even if you cut some corners.

The difficulty of adding a basement to an existing house can vary depending on the house’s location, the size of the basement, and the type and condition of the existing foundation. Adding a basement is a job best handled by the pros, so you’ll need to enlist professional help for this project.

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.

If you have the woodworking experience to build a bar from scratch and you have the time, DIYing the work is a no-brainer and can save a few thousand dollars. However, if you’re looking to include a sink, additional lighting fixtures, or high-end bar tops and cabinets, it’s usually a better idea to call in a pro. It will cost more, but the finished product will likely be worth it.

A finished basement must have a heat and electrical supply with an entrance that meets building code requirements, such as a stairwell to the home's main living space. It often must include finished walls, ceilings, and floors. If the finished basement includes a bedroom, it should have a heat source, an egress window, and a closet.

Remodeling, as opposed to finishing, means altering an already finished basement by adding a bathroom, bedroom, or living area.
