"I inherited some property a couple of years ago. I had to have it maintained and I couldn't do it myself. I hired several lawn services to do the upkeep. They would not show up, not do all that was agreed on, and it just got out of control because of the neglect. I hired Bess Brothers from a Facebook ad. Best thing I could have done. They're always on time, thorough with the details, courteous, and professional. They offer many services that are helpful with the upkeep of my property. I will be getting them to help again this season. If you're looking for honest , professional, and dependable service, these are your guys. 👍👍"

"Tom and Brian started my major project ahead of schedule. At this review the work that they have accomplished is running ahead of schedule with excellent results. They have gone over and above the building plans to accomplish this work. I found thier quote to be very reasonibly priced, thier time schedule well within reason. I am very pleased to have hired them to preform the work for this project. I will update this review as the job progresses."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

In most cases, your deck will need some form of deck footing to hold it in place, preventing moisture from rotting your wood and decreasing your deck’s lifespan. Concrete deck blocks are the most common type of footing for floating decks. Some homeowners use ground-level deck footings. For added security, consider digging and laying your ground-level footings below ground.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.

There are ways to clean your deck to help maintain a clean appearance. You can easily remove surface-level dirt and grime by wetting your deck with a hose and doing a quick scrub with store-bought deck cleaner monthly.

However, investing in professional deck cleaning services near you at least twice a year is worth it. This service saves you time and ensures that your deck will avoid accidentally becoming scratched by blasting the pressure washer at the wrong angle.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.
