"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

"I was very happy with him. It's a fairly small company. As far as I know, it's just him. He came over for the estimate. We agreed on a price. He started on the job within a day or two. It was a quick job. He was the only person working. I thought he was very professional. He answered any questions that we had. He was very courteous. He didn't try to come in the house or anything. He did good work."

"Our project started weeks after the agreed starting date. From then on we had numerous delays, some of these were because the contractor was in process of moving. However we also had a number of delays that was not communicated. We were told two weeks to complete, the remodel took over four months. Part of this was because the contractor did not order the countertop I wanted, and I was told when I asked about ETA that I had to order a different one from a different place. It was back order for over seven weeks. The cabinet and vanity is stained but not sealed. The cabinet I explained that I wanted ( I showed a picture) was around 50 inches tall, he installed one that goes up to six inches below the ceiling, leaving a weird gap. Several dents in the wall had to be touched up, and you can see every spot that was touched up, as it is lighter than the rest of the walls. When I asked for update on my vanity, he sent a photo with clothing and plastic bags covering it.Disappointing."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

When choosing materials for finishing basement walls, consider factors such as moisture resistance, durability, and fire resistance. Opt for materials specifically designed for basement environments, like moisture-resistant drywall or cement board. Insulation with vapor barriers can help regulate temperature and prevent condensation. Consider using mold-resistant paints or coatings.

Research and consult with experts to select materials that are suitable for your specific basement conditions and intended use. Prioritize quality and compatibility to achieve long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing results.

For most basement remodels, you’ll want to hire a general contractor. This is for a number of reasons, but the main two are that general contractors have dedicated teams they are comfortable with, and hiring one means you only have to deal with one pro. You may also get a better project quote since they can lump all their work and subcontracting into a single quote.

There are several small, inexpensive upgrades you can make to upgrade your basement. Although you still need to adhere to building codes and obtain permits when necessary, you can complete small but mighty tasks like painting the masonry walls and installing entertainment devices to make the space more usable.

The average cost of remodeling a basement is $30 to $75 per square foot. If your space is unfinished and looks like it may need more help, use the higher number when calculating your estimated basement remodeling costs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional 20% to the top of your estimate to cover any “what if” situations.

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.
