When it comes to weekday work, the busiest days for plumbers are Monday and Tuesday. Part of the reason is that people discover plumbing problems over the weekend but wait for weekdays to help save money. 

As for the busiest day ever, many plumbers point to “Brown Friday,” their nickname for the day after Thanksgiving. A day of guests, lots of food, and unfamiliar bathrooms can often lead to plumbing disasters, making that Friday a hotspot of emergency plumbing work. A standard toilet flange should fit snugly into the outflow pipe and sit level with the subfloor. Installing a new one without first removing the old one will make it impossible to form a seal and keep the toilet bowl bolted securely in place. 

However, if you’re dealing with leakage or wobbling because you’ve installed a new type of bathroom tile (making the floor taller), you may be able to avoid fully replacing the flange by opting for a toilet flange extender. Extenders typically come in kits for easy DIY installation, fit over the existing flange, and bring the drain connection higher.

Replacing a toilet takes two to four hours. Several factors, including the condition of the old toilet and flange, can impact the installation time. Inspect the flange for cracks, chips, or other signs of damage. You can reuse it and the bolts if they’re in good working order. If not, you’ll need to purchase an identical one and install it before attaching the toilet, which adds time. Be careful when moving the old and new toilets—they’re heavy, so it’s best to hire a pro to get the placement right.

If your toilet won’t stop running, you might have a bad fill valve. This may be the case if the valve has calcium or debris buildup, is cracked, or shows visible signs of wear and tear. A bad fill valve may also be the culprit if you’ve already checked the flapper and chain and adjusted the fill height to no avail.

Your toilet handle might not come back up if the nut is loose or the bolt threads are stripped. Try to tighten the mounting nut and wrap plumber’s tape around the handle bolt to fix stripped threads. It’s possible the handle was improperly installed. If that’s the case, you can use the instructions above to correct the handle’s position.
