A bathroom without a bathtub is called a half bath or powder room. This type of bathroom commonly contains a toilet and a sink and is smaller than a standard bathroom that includes a bathtub or shower. Half baths or powder rooms are commonplace on the first story of a home and are ideal as a guest toilet.

The wet area is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel. This is the shower and tub area and includes the plumbing, flooring, and surround. Tiling and custom work will drive up the cost of this area, especially if you use small mosaic tiles for a spa-like feel. To drive down costs, use a simple shower, small and larger tiles, or prefab shower walls.

Walk-in showers actually raise a home’s value, with one major caveat. You need to make sure that you have another traditional bathroom, complete with a tub, somewhere else in the home. If it’s your only bathroom, a walk-in shower can lower a home’s value a bit. Prospective buyers don’t want to have to choose between the two.

Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.

It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.
