Painting in ideal temperatures (between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) with moderate humidity and ample ventilation is the best way for your paint to dry properly. You can turn on box fans and crack open windows to add circulation, but be sure no dust or debris gets on your wet walls. You should wait for caulk to cure before painting it. Silicone and acrylic latex caulk can take anywhere from one to 10 days to fully cure, and polyurethane may take 10 to 12 days to cure. Whether you use a brush or roller depends on the size, shape, and amount of tiles. Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

Technically, mineral spirits are a type of paint thinner, so they can be used for the same purposes. In most cases, pure mineral spirits are preferable to other paint thinners. Still, if necessary, you can successfully use paint thinners for most of the same applications, such as thinning or cleaning oil paints.
