The best height for your garden fence really depends on your visual preferences and what types of pests are common in your area. If you’re only dealing with small pests, your garden fence can be just about 3 feet tall. You have several options for anchoring a temporary fence, ranging in cost and ease of installation. Sandbags are one solution, but may not hold up if you have inclement weather with strong winds. Spike and bolts are another alternative. While they’re inexpensive and easy to install, it can be difficult if your ground is too soft for in-ground drilling. Wind braces are another option—be sure to bolt these into the ground as well. While they can withstand turbulent wind, they can also be difficult to install if the ground is too soft.

It’s usually cheaper to buy pre-made fence panels than to build your own. This surprises many people since DIY tasks so often save money. However, large stores don’t have to pay the same amount per board of wood that homeowners do, allowing them to sell pre-made panels at a more cost-effective rate. Pre-made panels also save a great deal of time, energy, and guesswork. The drawback is that they are harder to customize to the shape and slope of your yard.

The standard height for a split rail fence is three or four feet. This height requires two to three horizontal rails, making it ideal for homeowners wanting a budget-friendly split rail fence. If you’re hoping to contain agile livestock or animals like dogs, geese, or goats, you may prefer to install a six-foot tall fence with four or five rails or a four-foot-tall fence with three horizontal rails. This will help prevent animals from climbing, crawling, or jumping through the rails.

When considering how much of a gap should be under a fence or gate, a good rule of thumb is to keep gaps between 2 and 5 inches tall. This allows for some ground clearance for the gate but still provides safety for children and pets, who shouldn’t be able to squeeze through a gap of that size.
