You can easily and cheaply use tin foil or cardboard to black out your windows. Save a pretty penny by cutting either material to the size of your windows and taping it to the window. Window tinting is not hard, but can be tedious. It does require steady hands and a lot of patience. The process can be time-consuming if this is your first time tinting home windows by yourself. While most films can be removed and reapplied within one sitting, repeated re-application would eventually render the film useless. If you’ve struggled with putting protective films on your phone or tablet, you might want to hire a professional to tint your windows.

Replacing a window frame will improve your home’s energy efficiency if the old frame is cracked or damaged in a way that allows unconditioned air from the outside into your living space or if you upgrade to a more energy-efficient window frame material. Aluminum is the least energy-efficient window frame material, followed by vinyl and wood. Fiberglass and composite frames are the most energy-efficient.

Use a combination of blackout methods to truly black out your windows. If you want to eliminate all light from your room, try installing a very dark tinted film and then putting up blackout shades over the entire window.
