"Dale stripped and power washed the deck which took about eight hours. He returned a couple of weeks later (due to weather conditions) after it had dried thoroughly and the temperatures were warm enough to stain (Cedar Tone). He and Laurie then stained the deck which took about five hours. It looks amazing! It rained that night and the temperature dropped but the water beaded up and had no negative effect on the wood. I trust Dale completely when it comes to staining wood. We are so pleased. Dale, Kelli, and Laurie are easy to work with and conscientious. They are the kind of people that you want to back again. According to Dale we won't have to though since the product he uses is commercial grade and has a warranty for three years and lasts two to three times longer than retail products. Our railing was replaced by Wagoner Handyman Services at a cost of $1250.00. The cost of the staining included the railing and stripping of the deck. We are so pleased. Thank you Dale, Kelli and Laurie. You were a pleasure to work with."

"Paul did some minor drywall repair after we fixed a plumbing leak. He repainted the ceiling and the kitchen. Separately he repainted our front porch including stabilizing a porch post that had some rot at the base. Paul and his crew were polite, efficient, professional, and did excellent work. Everything was thoroughly repaired and prepared rather than just putting a pretty face over it. We were always informed of our options, what would happen, and when. We have no hesitation about recommending them."

"The whole experience with Bill Schwenzer was wonderful. From the day he came to give us his estimate to the finish of the job, he was always on time, very professional, & worked extremely hard. He sealed off the kitchen to keep dust out of the rest of the house & cleaned up as he went. He was on the job the whole time, with one other person. He paid a lot of attention to details. He said it would take 5 days & he was finished in 5 days."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

No, your deck will not rot under artificial grass as long as it is installed properly. When installed correctly, the artificial grass features a drainage system that prevents rotting. Simply laying artificial grass on top of the decking without proper installation will not lead to an effective drainage system that prevents rotting.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

The average cost to professionally clean or pressure wash a deck is around $150, with prices typically ranging from $100 to $600. Several factors influence the final price, including the deck's size, material, condition, and how long it has been since its last cleaning. For a smaller deck of about 300 square feet, you might pay around $100. For a larger deck of 1,000 square feet or more, the cost could be closer to $300 to $400. Decks that are very dirty or haven't been cleaned in years may require more time and special detergents, which will increase the price. The deck's material also plays a role. Wood decks often cost more to clean because they require a gentle power washing technique to avoid damage. Composite decks are typically less expensive to clean, and cleaning a metal deck may cost around $100.

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, particularly for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. However, their use is regulated by local building codes, and they may not be permitted in areas prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes. Always consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.
