"What great company! We are so pleased with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Indianapolis and the customized LED lighting system they installed at our home. The entire process from beginning to end was very efficient. The company owner, Mitch, was prompt with a competitive quote and reasonable turnaround time. The installation crew was very professional and great to work with. Once they started, they continued until the project was completed to perfection and well within schedule. An older path lighting was completely rewired and revamped, cleaning the old fixtures until they looked brand new. They even made an unexpected visit back, several weeks later, to replace the bulbs for our outdoor post lighting. Their LED path lighting system has now greatly enhanced the beauty and visibility of the front and back of our home. We simply canâ t say enough about how pleased we are with this company!"

"They are amazing! Worked with our budget and went way beyond with customer service! Job was done a month ago and theyâ re still reaching out to make sure weâ re happy. Love them! I will be using them for all my landscaping needs! My yard has never looked this good. I should also say I am a particular person. "Dustin, of Glimmer Landscape Lighting, previously designed and installed a beautiful replacement lighting system for the front of our home. In this case he provided last minute repairs to an older system before an outdoor party. What a lifesaver! We will definitely contact Glimmer when the time comes for any future landscape lighting needs."

"The pros at LaMadrina Landscape got it right the first time. The craftsmanship of the walkway is superior and exceeded all of my expectations. The experienced pros were in and out within hours and they removed all excess debris and left our patio and surrounding area spotless. The communication throughout the project was excellent too. I was given a time line and reasonable quote for the project and it was indeed worth the wait and the price was right. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for experienced pros for their landscaping projects."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.

The five common types of landscape lighting are up-lighting, down-lighting, spotlights, built-in lighting, and pathway lighting.

  • Up-lighting casts light upwards from the ground, mostly for aesthetic purposes.

  • Down-lighting directs light onto the ground, lighting pathways, or outdoor space.

  • Spotlights cast direct, focused lighting in any direction.

  • Built-in lighting integrates lighting into an outdoor feature.

  • Pathway lighting illuminates walkways, increasing safety.

While wet-rated and damp-rated lighting is designed to handle contact with moisture, there’s a difference between the two. Wet-rated lighting is safety-rated to be placed in areas with direct exposure to water, including your shower. Fixtures classed as wet-rated are made with waterproof seals to protect the filament and other electrical components from water and moisture.

Damp-rated fixtures can be used in places with some moisture contact, but not direct exposure. They don’t have the same waterproof seals used in wet-rated fixtures. Damp-rated lighting can be used on your bathroom ceiling or along a wall outside of your shower.

To maintain your outdoor lighting and prevent major issues, you should regularly clean the fixtures, inspect the wiring and connections, and replace worn or burnt-out bulbs promptly. These simple steps ensure consistent operation and extend the life of your lighting system.

If half of a string of Christmas lights is out, it is likely because of a single burned-out, loose, or broken bulb within that section. Long strands of lights often contain more than one circuit, so when one bulb fails, it can cause the entire circuit (or half the strand) to go dark. To fix this, inspect the unlit section and test each bulb to ensure it is tight and functioning properly. Replacing the faulty bulb or repairing a damaged shunt will typically solve the problem.
