"Scheduling, design and installation all handled in a pleasant and professional manner. The end results look great, and the price reasonable. We had a shelving unit installed in our linen closet, shelving added to our basement stairwell and a slat wall on the other side for hanging things on."

"Working with Chicagoland Home Products for my closets has been an excellent experience. We initially did four shelving projects with them a few years ago. They did such an excellent job and the closets and pantry have held up beautifully, so it was a no-brainer to have them complete my primary bedroom walk-in closet this month. Tammy is a pro and probably the nicest person you’ll ever meet! She remembered exactly who I was, even after a few years, and pulled up the previous design for my primary closet. We tweaked a few things to ensure I was happy and booked the install. The installers showed up on time, wore shoe covers without me asking, were very friendly, and completed my closet perfectly. I love it! I plan on working with Chicagoland Home Products in the future and recommend them to everyone."

"Roman is very detailed and knowledgeable. I've never had a contractor who tried that hard to understand the job even before coming for a quote. Very easy to get a hold of as well which is rare for contractors from this site. Would highly recommend."

"Super professional and helpful, very quick and communicative and VERY handy. Seriously, normally you would need 5 different companies just to do these things, but this small company is so helpful in just making sure clients are comfortable So they ended up doing A LOT for me, especially since there's so much to do for a new apartment , which I greatly appreciate. And I ended up using them for another apartment too because of how good they were These were just a handful of stuff they did, nothing too crazy but as you can tell as the list adds up, it was way easier to have just the same guys do it: - new vinyl flooring installation - painting entire unit - bathroom tiles - drywall installation - front step repairing (old house, so it was shaky) - closet shelf installation - cabinet install - changed mortice old locks to cylindrical normal locks - installed finished trim around bathroom door - shoebase trim across the whole unit - door actuator install - spray paint old vents to white Basically I helped design some of the aspects or thought processes with Ben and he was able to provide feedback. The installation of cabinets and closets for example was exactly where I wanted them to be! Then, each invoice was line itemed so it's easy to understand what everything cost. Again very clear & communicative Love them , highly recommend!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

The average closet remodel cost ranges between $500 and $2,500. However, the cost can vary greatly depending on the project scope. Homeowners can expect to pay $10 to $25 per square foot on a closet remodeling project.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

Yes, 12-inch shelves are often considered the standard closet shelf depth for storing folded clothing, shoes, and small containers. However, if you plan to store bulky items such as blankets, baskets, or cleaning supplies, you may want to go deeper. For specialized layouts, an adjustable system can give you more flexibility.

Costs depend on material, customization level, and additional features like lighting or sliding doors.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.
