My name is Pete. I went to welding school in 2012, been welding since 2012. Just trying to get my own thing started and make a name for myself. I’m a hard worker and will do the job right the first time, and work till it’s done.

Obsidian Manufacturing Industries, Inc. is a woman-led small business in the manufacturing industry and located in Rockford, Illinois. We may be categorized as a small business, but we have a lot to offer! We build and repair a variety of machine tool products including lifting magnets, workholding and rotary surface grinders. Additionally, we have a full machine shop and offer surface grinding services with our 6 in-house grinders. We own four brands, and each have a website in addition to our corporate website. We manufacture workholding machine tools under the Magna-Lock USA brand and provide repair services for our own and many other workholding brands. We also manufacture, repair, and offer certification services for MagnaLift and Power-Grip lifting magnets. In 2018 we acquired Arter Precision Grinding Machines which is a brand of rotary surface grinders that is over a hundred years old. We provide OEM spare parts and repair services for all Arter grinding machines as well as manufacture new CNC models.

Welding questions, answered by experts

A steel beam is stronger than a wood beam and requires fewer vertical supports underneath, which means it’s a better option for larger structures or if you want an open space under your home that doesn’t have posts as obstructions. However, steel I-beams cost more than wood ones, and they can be difficult to install retroactively, as getting them into the basement area can be challenging, if not impossible.

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

Professional metal fabricators usually charge around $70 per hour. Three of the largest cost factors are the size and complexity of the project and the price of materials. The type of metal can impact the cost as much as the intricacy of the metal fabrication you want done. Another cost factor is your geographic location, as labor and materials can vary widely depending on the cost of living where you live.

Choosing the right metal fabricator for your project begins with research. Find a reputable fabrication company by searching for reputable contractors in your area, and then reviewing photos of their previous work, customer reviews, and photos of the company’s workshop.

Once you’ve narrowed down the list, contact the companies to ask about the types of metal fabrication projects they specialize and inquire about guarantees and warranties on workmanship. You should also ensure the company uses high-quality material, and ask about the schedule and turnaround time for your proposed project.

Some states require welders to be licensed and certified, while others don’t. However, it’s always a good idea to hire a licensed welder, regardless of requirements in your area, especially if you need welding for structural components of your home or gas lines. Licensed welders have gone through training and testing to prove their skills, so they’re less likely to make a mistake that could be detrimental to your home. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to determine whether your potential hire has a welding license.
