"We have hired Jack Ames twice now. Two years ago he removed and then completely redid our driveway. We liked his work and great pricing so we called him again to add on. They go a step above all the time. The first time he did a last minute removal of old concete and poured a step to our patio that was not on his list. This time, he even went back and filled in dirt where the concrete would have had a huge drop off to the grass. This will save us a ton of back breaking work. Lastly, know your rights to request a Sworn Statement (A document that lists the contractors and suppliers that provide material or labor to a construction project. Polished concrete floors also have downsides. Some homeowners, for example, might dislike the coldness of the material (though area rugs can help warm up the space). Concrete floors are also hard, which isn’t always ideal for children and pets. What’s more, these floors are susceptible to cracking, and repairs can be costly. Some homeowners might not like that installation isn’t DIY-friendly. 

If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. The lack of a proper gravel layer can also lead to drainage issues below your slab, leading to water issues throughout your lawn and around your foundation.

Use a dehumidifier for indoor concrete and a wet vacuum for outdoor surfaces. Sprinkle absorbent materials like sawdust or cat litter to soak up the remaining moisture. If the concrete is outside, simply wait for a few hot, dry days. If the concrete is inside, make sure you have good ventilation for a few days so that any remaining moisture can completely dry out.

Like all building materials, concrete weakens with age due to temperature changes, moisture, and cracks that widen over time. Keep in mind that there are ways to keep your concrete strong by resealing it every two to three years, avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals, and addressing small cracks as quickly as possible.

Building a concrete driveway normally takes between one and three days, including the time to cure the concrete. Wait at least seven days before driving on your driveway and two days before walking on it. Your contractor may require additional time if you need to level the ground, install a drainage system, or order special concrete materials. Installing a driveway also often requires a permit, so be sure to include this wait into your prep time as well.
