"I contracted for a rear porch rebuild and JT and crew did an awesome job! I was grateful that JT was on site to answer any questions the city inspector had about the rebuild. I was also grateful for the clean-up each day. Thank you!"

"Andy & his guys with A&M Construction did an amazing job on my bathroom remodel. A complete gut to a personal spa. Installed a 66" wide, deep soaker bathtub! Makes it feel like a spa every time I walk in. In addition replaced the windows & exterior doors. Excellent work, communication, and attention to details, and of course my needs!"

"Everything went well from the minute I called to get an estimate, I felt so comfortable, I had a million questions, I was lil nervous because I have hired contractors in the past, and was ripped off, but from start to finish Imperial 1 made sure I was informed and happy with the work they did. I felt better knowing they wanted to make sure my project came out just to my liking"

"Professional and timely walk through of the job both during estimation process, prior to signing contract, explanation of contract, and multiple walk-throughs during construction. "His name is George, great guy and he do it all. Very professional, on time and did exactly what we agreed on and some. He reinforced my ceiling to install chandelier and you can not tell where he taped and mudded. He also painted my living room, hall way and wood trim in a bedroom. Wish I could upload pics, please do not hesitate to give him a call. Thanks for being great!!!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
