Drywall mud should be left to dry for at least 24 hours before sanding, though drying time depends on the thickness of the application, humidity, and room temperature. Thicker layers or projects done in high humidity may require 48 hours or more of drying time. You’ll know the mud is ready when it feels completely dry and appears light in color throughout. Sanding too early can cause smudging or gouges, so patience is key for a smooth, professional-looking finish.

Drywall can be installed directly on ceiling joists. In fact, this method is common in many construction projects. Drywall sheets are attached to the joists using screws, ensuring a secure and stable installation. Before attaching the drywall, it's important to mark the joist locations on the ceiling, allowing for accurate screw placement. Proper spacing between screws and careful taping and mudding of joints are crucial to creating a smooth and flawless ceiling surface. If the joists are in good condition and level, installing drywall directly on them is a practical and efficient approach.

You can install backsplash on kitchen drywall, as long as you ensure your drywall is clean and dry before you apply the tiles. Your kitchen walls should be made of green board drywall, which is moisture-resistant. If you don’t have green board where your new backsplash will go, you should swap it out.

It is more difficult to drywall a ceiling than it is to drywall a wall, but not so hard that DIYers can’t tackle it. One of the main issues with hanging drywall on your ceiling is getting it into place. Which style of corner bead you choose—whether metal or paper-faced—depends on your preference and if you’re comfortable using metal-cutting tools and a hammer. Metal bead offers superior strength and durability but its installation is slightly more involved. We’d say for most cases, it’s better to use metal bead but if you’re not comfortable working with metal, paper-faced bead will work just fine.
