"We replaced two 20+ year old skylights. The new skylights were installed so cleanly, no inside work was necessary. Also on the outside the replacement shingles matched perfectly, so inside and out no one would know we had that type of work done. Love the new solar skylights, so quiet! The crew did an excellent job and very friendly!"

"Ron and Kevin did an excellent job of replacing our old skylights. Since the old, 30-year-old, skylights were no longer being produced, Ron custom designed skylights to fit in our space so they resembled our old skylights. They look fabulous. Ron and Kevin came when they said they would, worked diligently, and cleaned up after themselves. We were kept in the loop as to what was being done and what the cost would be. Ron is man of his word. Highly recommend."

"Ryan, sales mgr explained and answered all my questions, as well as explaining why the cost could go up due to a design problem that caused water to pool on the roof. Turns out that the fix had to change the look of my house! I told Bill, the carpenter on the team, that it was important to maintain my home's unique character. He came up with an idea that while it did change the look, it kept all the mid-century charm that I love. More importantly, the work done by the crew was excellent. I was able to watch them work. They were all business and efficiency. Bill installed 2 new skylights, and Ryan suggested a modification to allow even more light to come in. The crew was super clean and left my backyard in better shape than when they came. I feel that Ryan and Bill listened to everything I said and did not discount a word. A special thanks to Bill, because I never would have thought of the solution he came up with."

"Sam came as agreed. He inspected my roof, found three places that needed repair. He repaired all three at what I considered a reasonable price. I am happy with what he did. I'd definitely call him the next time I need a roof repair."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Skylights increase natural light, improve ventilation, and enhance aesthetic appeal in rooms.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Costs depend on skylight size, roof type, and additional features like blinds or tinting.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.
