"BEWARE consumers. This company was hired by another company to install an irrigation system on a new construction. I didn't know anything about this type of thing so, unfortunately, thought they knew what they were doing since they were hired by a landscaper(also very poor workmanship) who was hired by my builder(excellent). I was SO wrong. After 3 years of having nothing but problems with the system, I just finished spending thousands of dollars to have a reputable company come in and totally revamp the system. After speaking numerous times with the foreman, he clearly informed and showed me all the things that were done improperly and the poor quality of materials used. DO NOT hire this company do anything regarding irrigation. You will live to regret it on so many levels. They might do okay on other services they provide but I can honestly give you a first-hand review on how qualified they are to do irrigation systems. I'd like to say you get what you pay for but I didn't even get that. I would give them a negative star rating if I could."

The dormant season between winter and late spring, when all the leaves have fallen off, is the best time of year to cut down a tree. Frozen earth is actually preferable for tree removal because it won’t disturb the surrounding landscape as much as it would if you removed the tree during warmer months.

If the tree is very small—under 4 or 5 inches in diameter—and you’re experienced handling a chainsaw, you may be able to cut down the tree on your own, provided there’s plenty of room for it to fall.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth. 

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

Stump grindings are usually safe to use in soil, but in some cases, it’s not recommended. Wood chips in particular can bind nitrogen in the soil, which will make it difficult for grass to grow. That’s why it’s important to remove most wood chips and use healthy garden soil if you want to cover the stump spot with grass. Large wood chips may attract beetles and could encourage the growth of fungi when they decay, so you may want to remove them when using the grindings.

What tools you’ll need to remove a tree stump will depend on the method you choose. Generally, a shovel, mattock or pickax, chainsaw, garden shears, and a wheelbarrow will help, but do your research once you choose your DIY strategy. You should also be sure to add safety supplies like goggles, ear protection, gloves, and more to your list, no matter which method you choose.
