Many painters determine prices for home painting jobs using a base rate per square foot. Others use square footage to estimate the amount of paint required and charge a multiple of the material cost, and some may estimate the time required and factor that in. To prep a floor for painting, start by sweeping and cleaning any loose debris that could puncture the protective material. Take out as much furniture as possible. Then lay plastic, canvas, rosin paper, or masonite sheets across the room, securing them at the edges with masking tape. Plan your painting so that you minimize the chances you’ll step in and track any splatters.

Mid-century modern design is quite colorful and often includes striking reds, ochre, bright yellows, and retro colors like aqua and mint greens and pinks. In many cases, the design uses these bolder colors to create contrast with a neutral palette that includes earthy browns, whites, and grays. The degree to which you include bold colors in your mid-century modern design is all about personal preference. It gives you the freedom to stay mostly muted and use accent walls or pillow covers to bring pops of colors, or go all in and cover your walls with bright, loud colors.

Refinishing wood steps before painting the surrounding walls or trim is the best option. Sanding stair treads creates fine dust that can settle on freshly painted surfaces and interfere with adhesion. Plus, refinishing involves heavy foot traffic, equipment, and potential splashes from stain or sealant, which can damage new paint. By tackling the stairs first, you reduce the risk of damaging painted walls and can more easily tape off and protect surfaces during painting.

While you can use wall paint on the ceiling, there are some differences between ceiling and wall paint. Ceiling paint tends to be thicker, cover discoloration better, and comes in a more limited color selection. Wall paint is thinner, holds up to regular cleaning better, and is available in an almost endless variety of colors.
