"Luis was absolutely phenomenal. He installed for us a 240volt connection in our garage for our electric car. He gave us the best price, was on time, very professional, and took the time to explain everything to us before and during the process of installation. Incredible, meticulous work. Thank you Luis."

"CSA installed a custom home theater, a ELK security & automation system, a driveway gate system with intercom, Russound whole house audio/intercom system in 12 different rooms, Lutron Radio RA lighting control system and 12 cameras on exterior of our house. I m extremely impressed with CSA from our first walk through, the design build they put together, the options they proposed to my wife and myself and how Chad kept it as simple as possible when presenting what our system was capable of doing. It s overwhelming but he did a fantastic job to try and keep it in Lameon terms. From the pre-wire to day of final completion CSA went above and beyond our expectations. You can truly tell they love what they do and have a passion for it. When our house was completely finished CSA was the last contractor to finish do to everything in our house is automated and controlled through our wall touchscreens, laptops and mobile devices. We can open our entry or exit driveway gates from our house phone, touchscreens or any mobile device that CSA installed a custom built app on. While we re home or anywhere in the world as long as we have 4g or WiFi. All of our exterior lights are set up to be at our desired level from dusk to dawn and when anyone walks past any camera at night the light level of the closet light brightens for a few minutes and after camera no longer detects motion level goes back down. It s just amazing what this system can do. We have our main front door locks, side entry garage door lock and all 4 of our garage doors all controlled by this system and if a door is opened and we re not within 1000 yards of our home we re notified. We couldn t be more pleased with the job CSA did and most of all the time they took to train us on how to use and control every aspect of our whole smart home. Thank you again CSA. We highly recommend anyone in the need of security, audio & video and home automation needs to contact CSA. We had 3 other A/v automation contractors do drawings and pricing proposals and what stood out the most with CSA is the options we were given, the time they spent with us on making sure we were aware of what they were capable of doing and providing us with 3 separate pricing options from platinum to silver. They were the only contractor that did that. This was our final home we will build and CSA knew how special this dream home meant to us so thank you again CSA for going above and beyond from start to finish."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
