"Deserves zero starts. Hired them to build somewhat of a complex garage and 130' of driveway. Drive and garage slab were poured and radiant heat tubing was part of the concrete work. They didn't follow the concrete drawings. We were to have a 4" foundation wall to elevate the studs. They did a monolithic pour instead with the studs installed directly on the slab. Not good when you bring in wet cars and the floor get wet, so will the drywall. Having mold issues due to the concrete not being pitched correctly. They tried using cheaper non-structural studs for the walls. Again, not following the drawings. Garage was framed, sided and roofing installed. No electric, insulation, drywall doors/windows were installed. Never came back to finish the job and stopped taking my calls. I was out my deposit money for overhead doors and windows. They left me with a mess. My yard was trashed, debris everywhere. Had to hire new contractors to correct mistakes and finish the job. DO NOT HIRE!"

Hardwood Flooring questions, answered by experts

Because concrete is porous, installing flooring directly onto the surface is not a good idea. Any moisture within the concrete due to atmospheric conditions or seasonal humidity can seep into your flooring, causing warping or damage. In most cases, you’ll need to install at least a moisture barrier between the concrete and the flooring you choose.

Carpeting a room is less expensive than installing laminate flooring on average. However, the final cost will depend on your chosen materials and labor considerations for a complicated room layout or stairs. The cost for carpeting jobs can quickly meet or even exceed that of laminate if you choose very high-quality materials for a large space. Keep in mind that carpet also needs padding underneath, which adds to overall project costs.

It is normal to glue carpet down, though it’s not the only or the most popular method of installing carpet. Modern techniques include tack strips and stretching the carpet, but you might still find glued carpet in older homes or a home with a DIY’d past. Removing a glued-down carpet will be harder compared to other methods of installation.

There are many different types of carpets for you to choose from. When choosing a carpet, it’s essential to consider the following:

  • Fiber: Describes what your carpet is made of, such as polyester, wool, nylon, or acrylic.

  • Pile type: Explains how your carpet looks. Your carpet fibers can be looped, twisted, cut, or woven.

  • Pile height: Describes the length of your carpet. You can choose a low, medium, or high pile.

  • Density: Refers to how close yarn fibers are to each other.

Most DIYers can learn how to remove carpet although it’s time and labor-intensive. However, if you have glued-down carpet and are concerned about damaging the substrate below, it's best to call a professional carpet remover. Also, removing glue-down carpet is more work than dealing with wall-to-wall carpet because you have to get rid of all traces of the adhesive from your subfloor to prepare it for a new installation.
