Condensation can occur on the inside of a roof, but it should always be temporary. It does not necessarily mean there is a roof leak. Condensation happens when the inside and outside of a house are at different temperatures. For instance, if it is hot during the day and then gets very cold at night, the inside of the house will be warmer than the outside and may cause condensation to form on the inside of the attic. This may not be cause for concern, but if it is happening frequently, it should be addressed; otherwise, it could cause roof leaks, compromise the structural integrity of the wood, or allow mold to grow.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

• Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

• Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

• Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

The least suitable roof for solar panels is a wood shake roof. An electrical mishap with your solar panels could start a fire on the roof, so some areas don’t allow solar panels on wood roofs. You don’t have to let a wood roof stop you from going solar. You can replace your wood shakes with shingles. Installing the panels on the ground is another option.
