"I left a voicemail for Paul explaining that the vault door was jammed and that my staff and I were stuck at our Army Reserve Unit until we could get someone to come fix it so we could close and arm it. Even though it was 1800 hrs when we called, he had not only responded, but started travel to our location by the time he did. It was no more than 20 minutes between the end of my voicemail and the minute Paul pulled into our parking lot. Paul is a true pro. Polite and professional through and through, he didn't even complain when we told him that we weren't able to let him see the vault combination (obviously unorthodox, but hey, we are still the Army.) Instead of being insulted, he found a very creative way to put our combination holder's mind at ease without a word of complaint or protest, and even took some extra time at the end to provide us some maintenance tips to avoid requiring his late night services again."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Any type of dead bolt lock provides the highest level of safety for a single device. However, it’s also important to determine a lock's grade. Locks can come in either Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3, which indicates how durable it is and if it’s constructed solidly. Safety experts recommend choosing locks based on Grade 1, which offers the highest level of durability.

If you’re having an issue turning the key inside a lock, chances are there is dust or dirt buildup within the cylinder. The easiest solution is applying a dry lubricant to the lock, which loosens the dirt buildup. You may need to turn the key a few times for it to work properly again.

The cost to rekey locks on your home is $40 to $100 plus $15 to $40 per lock. Rekeying means you can keep your existing locks but simply change the key. You’ll still need a pro to cut a new key and rekey the lock, but no new hardware is required. Rekeying is a good option if:

  • You need a quick way to upgrade your current locks

  • You have a quality lock that works well

  • You recently moved in and want to ensure you’re the only one with access

  • You lost a key

First, maintain composure and avoid forcing it further. Inspect the key to see if enough material remains exposed for extraction. Use pliers or tweezers to grasp and gently pull out the broken piece if possible. Lubricate the keyhole with a graphite-based spray to aid removal. If self-removal proves challenging or risks damaging the lock, seek a professional locksmith's assistance. They possess the necessary tools and expertise to extract the key without causing damage.
