"Josh came out quickly to give me an estimate and was able to get me on the schedule right away. The roof turned out great! I asked him to pick out the shingles himself because he’s the professional, and they look perfect. When the old shingles came off, we discovered the roof decking had wide gaps that needed to be replaced. Even though it meant more than double the time and work, Josh handled it without hesitation. He also repaired an outdoor stairway deck for me and did an excellent job. His on-the-spot quote for the extra work was fair and reasonable, especially for the labor involved. The material costs are what they are these days, but Josh kept everything transparent and did high-quality work from start to finish. I would absolutely hire him again."

Vinyl Siding Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Purchasing the same model and color of siding that your home currently has gives you the best chance at an accurate match. However, even if you purchase replacement siding from the same manufacturer, fading often causes a slight color mismatch. Dark colored siding fades faster than light colored siding, so you may notice a color mismatch more with dark colors. When trying to learn how to restore faded vinyl siding, cleaning the original siding is a good start. You also may be able to paint your existing siding to create a better match with the new siding.

Vinyl siding costs include the cost of materials, which ranges from $3 to $12 per square foot, and the cost of labor to install it, which ranges from $2 to $5 per square foot. Provided you have the expertise and all the necessary supplies, including cutting tools, ladders, and scaffolding, you can save money on this project by DIYing the installation.

Vinyl siding costs about $12,200 on average, ranging from $6,400 to $18,300. The low end of the overall price range is about $1,500 and increases to $30,000 or more on the high end. You can expect project costs to vary based on home size, local labor rates, and type of vinyl siding. Types of vinyl siding include:

  • Clapboard: $2–$7 per square foot

  • Dutch lap: $2–$7 per square foot

  • Shake: $6.50 per square foot

  • Insulated vinyl: $8 per square foot

  • Vertical: $5.50 per square foot

  • Vinyl log: $4 per square foot

  • Scallop: $5–$10 per square foot

Hail as small as 3/4 inch (about the size of a penny) can cause damage to your siding. When hail reaches 1 inch in size, you can expect to see more cracks, chips, and holes, and hail that’s 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 inches around will cause significant damage. If you see hail that’s 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches or more in size, the damage is likely to be extensive and possibly even dangerous.

Because vinyl is a type of plastic, it can start to melt and then warp when it has been exposed to too much heat. While you can’t control the amount of sun your home gets every year, you can take some precautions to help your vinyl siding. Choose lighter colors for your siding, such as whites, off-whites, and beiges; these colors will reflect light rather than absorb it. You should also avoid oil-based coatings, which tend to crack more easily when applied to vinyl—this allows more heat to get to the siding.
