Hedges can be trimmed in many other shapes than the standard square shape. They can be cut into spiral, cone, and sphere shapes. However, cutting and maintaining these types of shapes is much more challenging. There are metal frames that you can purchase to place around the hedge to make it much easier.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

Most bamboo can send roots down two to three feet into the ground. However, when stopping bamboo from spreading, the focus is on the runner roots or rhizomes. These roots are much shallower, staying 12 inches or less from the surface, so they’re easier to find and remove. But if you want to remove the bamboo entirely, you’ll have to dig out the full root system.

Many ways to landscape a steep slope on a budget exist. Avoiding expensive retaining wall construction is the first step. Consider creating a rocky slope with boulders or large stones, or think about planting perennials that return every year with a single investment. Transplanting small trees from elsewhere on your property is also possible and can help to stabilize steep slopes without purchasing new ones. 

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits 

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.
