"Austin and the team at Rein Landscaping did a sod install at my house and the results were excellent. From prep to install, everything was done the right way. The crew was professional, on time, and paid attention to the details that actually matter. The lawn looks great and the whole process was smooth and well organized. I’d definitely recommend Austin and Rein Landscaping to anyone looking for quality work done right."

"We are new to the Champaign area and our house needs extensive renovations. What extreme good luck for us that we found Nate's Painting. Nate and his staff are absolutely professional, responsive, and do high quality work at a very fair price. To date they have painted our entire home, removed an unsightly drop ceiling and replaced it with drywall, totally remodeled a bathroom, and completed several smaller jobs. Josh has done much of the work and as well as being a most conscientious and talented professional , he is just the nicest guy. We will continue to use Nate and his crew until all our renovations are complete."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Landscaping prices are sometimes negotiable, but it depends on the professional with whom you’re working. In most cases, you’ll have a better chance of negotiating prices down the more work you have done. Your pro might be willing to discount labor if they’re guaranteed a large job. You can also ask your landscaper to recommend more affordable materials that will still bring your vision to life to save.

You should avoid planting grass, shrubs, plants, and trees in freezing temperatures, as the ground can get frozen and become too hard for proper root growth. It’s best to plant in the fall to allow your plants to establish root systems before the first frost. Landscaping when the average temperature in your area is between 50 and 60 degrees will usually deliver the best results.

Plant a peach tree right at the end of your local dormancy period, likely at the very end of winter after the last frost when you can dig into the soft soil. Plan your backyard gardening season, including when planting peach trees, based on the frost schedule predicted in your local hardiness zone.

A scattering of leaves won’t pose a problem through the winter, but a thicker layer of leaves may not decompose before the first frost and can instead weigh down your grass and harbor mold or fungi. A thick layer of leaves also cuts off light and air that grass needs to grow. That’s why we suggest removing thick leaf layers within several days if possible. If your lawn goes dormant over the winter and snow has already caught up with you, then remove the leaves in early spring before your grass-growing season starts so your lawn can thrive.

Hedge plants are available in almost every size, from seedlings to fully mature, six-foot-tall shrubs. Planting smaller plants is much easier and more cost-effective. However, it can take years for the plants to reach maturity and create a full hedge. Garden centers and specialty retailers sometimes offer three to four-foot wide plants that you can simply plant next to each other for an instant full hedge.
