"While removing the old roof, the aluminum coverings on our mansard roof dormers were damaged. The roofing crew attempted to repair the damage but the result was not satisfactory. As compensation they deducted a small amount from the total bill."

"The entire staff at MDD Exteriors were very professional and courteous and went beyond our expectations working with us on some difficult situations with our roof. The quality of the workmanship was top notch and they got our roof done right on schedule. Daniel and Arek were always available to answer our questions and concerns that we had. The workers were hard-working and paid attention to detail. The guys were also exceptional at doing a final check of the work that was completed. I would highly recommend MDD Exteriors"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Though cedar shakes often get confused with shingles, there are a few key differences between wood shakes and wood shingles. For one, cedar shingle prices are lower, although shingles are less durable than wood shakes. Cedar shakes are thicker than shingles (shingles range from about 3/8 to 1/2 inches thick, compared to 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick for shakes). Wood shakes are handmade, while shingles are usually machine-made. Also, wood shakes work better on steeper roofs than shingles do. While the cost of cedar shingles is more budget-friendly, there are many great reasons to choose shakes.

Many homeowners believe that a modern home looks better with a flat roof than a sloped roof. A flat roof can provide several aesthetic benefits for modern homes. Among the pros and cons of a flat roof for a modern home design are the clean lines and straight edges that it delivers to improve curb appeal.

You only need to replace a roof before moving if it’s extremely old or has more than just a couple minor damages. For instance, leaks, uplifted shingles, or obvious holes are issues no one wants to deal with right when they move in, and will automatically repel potential buyers that might have otherwise been interested.

The most common slope, or roof pitch, for a shed is 4:12 or four inches of height for every horizontal foot. For areas that experience heavy snow loads, a steeper roof of 6:12 or 9:12 is best.

Moving a chimney is possible, but it is a very complex process that requires professional expertise, knowledge of building codes, and safety protocols. Most homeowners find it easier to remove the fireplace and build a new fireplace and chimney in the new location of your home. Talk to your chimney pro about all your options, their costs, and pros and cons.
