"Hemmert Electric treated us poorly. We asked for an electrical box to be installed on a pole at the old homestead. We had purchased the box in hopes of installing it ourselves but decided against it. We then asked them to install it. They kept promising to get to it, but it took over 8 weeks to get the job done. Then when we got the bill, we were shocked! They installed the box that we purchased, but did not notice that it was the wrong meter. They took that installation charge off the bill, but then charges us an excessive fee for making two service calls that were because of their mistakes. They went to the property, saw an old 50 year old meter on the ground and said, We cannot install that. I told them earlier the box was in the shed but they claimed that I did not tell them where it was, yet earlier they said they saw a box in the shed but did not know it was the meter box. When I complained about the excessive labor charge for the installation, they reduced the charge, but then added the two service calls to the property looking for the box that was exactly where I said it was. Finally, I was told I should have asked for a quote. I told them I am too trusting and expect that people are mostly good and will treat me fairly. Trusting Hemmert Electric was my mistake."

Central Vacuum Cleaners questions, answered by experts

Yes, installing a central vacuum system typically adds value to your home. The ease of use, longevity, and superior suction power of a central vacuum system can add up to $2,000 to your home’s value if you decide to sell. Potential buyers may consider the central vacuum a perk to purchasing your home.

Regular cleaning, sealing, and inspections help identify problems early and maintain aesthetics.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

The best way to clean central vacuum pipes is to use a maintenance sheet to dislodge clogs and wipe the inside of the pipes clean. Alternatively, a professional can clean your central vacuum pipes for you.
