You can often fit a new door slab into an old frame as long as the frame’s in decent shape. The frame needs to be solid, square, and free of warping or rot. The new door has to match the old one in width, height, and thickness, and the hinge and knob placements need to line up or be adjusted carefully. However, if your frame is damaged, swapping just the door won’t cut it. In that case, replacing the entire unit would be the best move for a smooth, secure installation.

If your door is sticking at the bottom because it’s making contact with the floor, there are a few fixes you can try. Start by tightening the hinge screws. Next, check for a floor sweep or insulation on the bottom edge of the door that is getting caught on the floor. If these solutions don’t work, try sanding the bottom edge of the door.

Most professionals charge between $100 and $300 to replace a door threshold. Interior door thresholds will typically sit toward the lower end of that range, while exterior door thresholds will usually be higher, as your pro will need to waterproof and weatherproof the new threshold. Replacing a marble threshold for a bathroom door is one of the most expensive threshold projects, as marble is far more expensive and more challenging to work with than wood.

Paint does nothing to minimize the spread of wood rot, so painting an infected door isn’t a good use of your time. Repairs or replacements are still necessary. Otherwise, the rot will continue to spread. Wait until after handling the rot problem before whipping out the paintbrush.
