He informed us how everything would work, he worked very fast and was pleasant to chat with, and the finished gazebo looks awesome! (just how I wanted it) I’ve worked with home service guys and contractors in the past and they always seem to be a little rough around the edges but Jared was not this way at all. The short answer is yes, it’s more expensive. This is because chalk paint is a more complicated blend of materials and is harder and more costly to produce. The average cost per quart is around $35 to $50. Comparing that with regular paint, which runs between $9 and $25 per quart, you can see how chalk paint costs add up. The good news is that you will apply fewer coats.  

There are times when you should remove all exterior paint before repainting. This includes when you need to get rid of lead-based paint (which should be done by a pro), or if you need to apply a different finish than what’s already there. Your house may also have too many pre-existing layers of old paint, in which case you’ll be better off getting rid of the old layers first.

Because of its chemical composition, you don’t need to prime fiberglass before painting. Paint will adhere without issues and have a smooth, even appearance without needing a primer coat. However, a top coat may be necessary to limit damages from weather and ensure you don’t need to repaint your door so soon.  

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

Since you’ll be going back over an oil-based paint (stain or varnish), you need the proper material for good adhesion. Using an oil primer is critical to ensuring that the longevity of your work stands the test of time. You can apply any type of paint (oil or latex paint) on top of an oil primer after it has cured.
